Save the Ta-tas!

Happy Thursday, everyone! Sorry the post didn't appear on Wednesday like it usually does. I've had one hell of a week with work training lasting eight and a half hours a day (with one hour travel time to get there) for the past two days, not to mention the usual massive piles of homework.

Initially, I had no idea what to post about today. But then when I was browsing through Facebook the little lightbulb in my head flickered on. Why not talk about breast cancer awareness? Even though this is meant as a book/writing blog, the majority of my posts are generalized and I think this is important enough to deserve a post of it's own.

As I'm sure most of you know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. October is the time when organizations such as, the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and the Save the Ta-tas campaign really jump into high gear.

Now what got me thinking about this is the Facebook phenomenon women have been participating in about purses: "I like it on the table," "I like it on the floor," etc. While I understand the premise behind this and I think it's great--getting the news stations to talk about Breast Cancer Awareness like they did last year when posting bra colors--a friend pointed out: how does this actually have anything to do with breast cancer?

As a result, I started thinking that it would be great if we started something that talked about the issues involved in breast cancer. Men should not be excluded from this. The majority of people diagnosed with breast cancer are women, but while it may be rare, men can be diagnosed with breast cancer as well--it's not solely an issue for women, ladies. So rather than excluding men and making them wonder what the heck we're all talking about, we need to be including them in the discussion.

Rather than talking about purses (though the idea really is an admirable effort), we should be promoting self breast checks, participating in walks and fundraisers for the cure, etc. Here is my thought: what if all the bloggers out there devoted one post in the month of October to raising breast cancer awareness? Think of how many thousands of people we could reach. When you consider that the average small-time blogger has at least 50 followers and out of those 50 followers many of them are other bloggers or people who would willing spread the word, that adds up to a lot of people.

So that's my charge for you this week. If you're a blogger, devote a post to breast cancer awareness. Even if you're not a blogger, promote your favorite blogs or campaigns that are raising awareness on your Facebook, Twitter, Myspace and any other social networking site. I think we could really get something going here. All it takes is a few people to get this started.
