Happy Friday, everyone! Are you gearing up for the weekend?
Today is
Part Three of the Seymour Agency "THE CALL" blog hop hosted by the Seymour
Agency Promotions Manager, Tonya Kuper! Want to know what happened in the aftermath of "the call" from my wonderful agent Nicole Resciniti? Check
out my answer to the questions below.
TONYA: After "the call." What happened after
the day/night of the call? Did you have to give other agents a heads up?
How long before you signed papers? How long have you had your current
agent? Has your agent sold your work? If so, can you give any details
(Title, genre, release date)? Do you have words for aspiring writers or
readers of your category and genre?
KAIT: While on the phone with Nicole, I was so tempted to scream right then that I accepted her offer because of how excited I was (which probably would have been a relief to Nic so she didn't have to wait in suspense to find out my decision), but I knew from all the author advice and agent blogs I'd read that I should preview my options before I made a decision. It's important to find who is the best fit for you. I told Nic that several other agents had the full manuscript and that I would get back to her within the next few days once I'd heard from them.
After that, my night was normal. I went to work (this is when I was still dancing professionally at an Arabic restaurant near Orlando FL) and the whole time all I could think about was the fact that I'd received an offer of representation. And only two weeks after I'd just got engaged! My life felt like pure bliss. When I got home late that night, I emailed the other agents.
As Nic told me in our initial call, once you get an offer from one agent, it's like dropping a bucket of blood into a pool of sharks--they swarm and suddenly everyone is looking for a bite. She was exactly right. After hearing back from the other agents, I couldn't help but feel that their excitement about my manuscript was forced--as if they wanted it only because someone else did. I won't name names, but I even had one agent get mad because I asked her for a response within the next week. She angrily told me that she couldn't fulfill that request and if I wanted to work with her I could be patient, and she should receive fair and ample time to review my novel just like the other agent had. She complained because she'd only had my manuscript for a week when I told her about the offer and she'd been 'so excited for the project'. I informed her "the offering agent" (I wasn't going to drop Nic's name) had only had the manuscript one day before she offered, (much less time than the angry agent had) so there was no "fair time" about it. Needless to say, I respectfully told her I wasn't interested in working with her lol. The majority of the other agents were much more gracious.
But I digress...
With Nicole, I knew she genuinely wanted to represent my material since she was the first to offer. Ultimately, (aside from the fact that she is an amazing person and fabulous businesswoman) being the first to offer along with her enthusiasm about my work is what made me choose her above the others. I'm so glad that I did! Though several of the other agents had been in the business longer than Nicole (Nic was still a 'newer' agent at that point), I didn't care. I knew in my heart that Nic would do right by me and that she would champion my work, and she's done exactly that. Now, she's a Publisher's Marketplace top-dealmaker agent! Needless to say, I made the right decision. ;-)
I accepted Nic's offer several days after her initial call and it was about two weeks after that when I signed the agency contract. Nic has been my agent for slightly over a year now, though it seems like I've known her for much longer. She's an amazing person, a great friend, and a wonderful agent to boot. My manuscript went on submission in November of 2011 after several rounds of edits and Harlequin purchased it in May 2012 (they were the fourth publisher to offer, but offered the best deal by far--a three book contract to be exact!). That paranormal romance manuscript Nic signed me for is now titled TWILIGHT HUNTER. It's the first in my Execution Underground paranormal romance series and it releases with Harlequin's single-title HQN line in September of this year (2013). I also have a prequel to the series which Nicole later sold on proposal releasing in July. The prequel is called SHADOW HUNTER and will appear in an anthology called AFTER DARK alongside NYT and USA bestselling paranormal romance author, Gena Showalter.
As cliched as it sounds, my advice to other writers going through the submission process is to never give up! Twilight Hunter was my third manuscript. Though it was picked up within a month or so of me querying it, I'd queried two other manuscripts throughout the course of 3 years before that. I received hundreds of rejections. But you can't let those deter you and you can't give up. Keep striving to improve and some day, you'll get there. Learn from your slip ups and your mistakes and push forward. The difference between writers who will never be published and multi-published bestselling authors is determination and sheer stubbornness (don't take one rejection as the final answer). And pay attention to those rejections also! Once you start getting personalized non-form rejections, (that say you're writing is fabulous, strong, great, whatever [insert personalized compliment], but it's just not what they're looking for) know that you're getting very close! All it takes is one yes for the whole world of publishing to open up to you.
I hope you've enjoyed my "call" story! And thank you to Tonya for hosting this lovely blog hop! Have a great weekend!

"THE CALL" Blog Hop: Part 2
Happy Wednesday, everyone!
Hope your week is continuing to go well! Today is Part Two of the Seymour Agency "THE CALL" blog hop hosted by the Seymour Agency Promotions Manager, Tonya Kuper! Want to know what happened during "the call" from my wonderful agent Nicole Resciniti? Check out my answer to the questions below.
TONYA: "The call." Do you remember the date you got the call from your agent? What did you do to prepare for the call? If you didn't get the stereotypical call then how did your agent offer representation? What was your reaction while on the phone? What was your reaction/thoughts when you got off the phone?
KAIT: Nicole called me and offered representation in the evening on Saturday August 13th, 2011 (yes, I remember it that specifically lol). I wasn't even remotely prepared for the call. If you read my last post about the "before part" of the call in Part One, then you might remember that I said Nicole actually left me a voicemail when I didn't pick up her call, because it was an unknown number. Her message was something along the lines of 'Hi Kaitlyn. This is Nicole Resciniti from the Seymour Agency. I wanted to let you know that I read Skinwalkers [the W.I.P title of what is now Twilight Hunter], I loved it, and I'd love to represent it.' I was sitting on husband, Jon's, couch (at that time he was still my fiance) and I literally jumped up and screamed at the top of my lungs. I think everybody in the whole apartment complex probably heard me lol. I immediately started crying and jumping up and down. Jon was laughing and jumping up and down with me lol.
Before I called Nicole back, I called my mother and then my friend, Brittany Marczak (who is now a marketing assistant at Entangled Publishing), both of whom were an integral part of the writing of Twilight Hunter. Both my mother and Britt had supported me every step of the way, read several drafts, and they both were beyond happy at the news.
Once I'd finished briefly talking with them, I called Nicole back. The conversation mostly consisted of me squealing in joy as she talked about how much she loved my book and her vision of where she would like to submit the manuscript if I accepted her offer. I didn't ask many questions, because I was on cloud nine. Everything I'd ever planned to ask if I ever got the call just completely toppled out of my head. So much for planning ahead!
When I got off the phone with her, I was still crying and the main word I would use to describe my feelings then is stunned. I cried on and off for the rest of that night out of pure happiness--and several times within the following week as well!
Check back on Friday to read about the aftermath of the "call" from my agent, Nicole Resciniti!

"THE CALL" Blog Hop: Part 1
Happy Monday, everyone!
Hope your week is getting off to a great start! Today is Part One of the Seymour Agency "THE CALL" blog hop hosted by the Seymour Agency Promotions Manager, Tonya Kuper! Want to know what happened before I got "the call" from my wonderful agent Nicole Resciniti? Check out my answer to the questions below.
TONYA: Before "the call." What category and genre do you write? What to you do other than write? How did you end up in contact with your agent from the Seymour Agency (cold query, conference, etc.)? Did you communicate with your agent before you got "the call" from them (did you talk at a conference, email, do a Revise & Resubmit)?
KAIT: I write adult paranormal romance as Kait Ballenger, and Y.A urban fantasy and contemporary New Adult under my maiden name, Kaitlyn Schulz. Other than writing, I work part time at an assisted living facility as an activities director, caring mainly for Alzheimer's and dementia patients. I'm a professional English tutor and I've been known to dabble in professional Egyptian cabaret bellydancing (seriously) ;-) I'm also a student in Spalding University's Masters of Fine Arts program, where I'm earning my degree, so I can teach creative writing at a university level.
I ended up in contact with Nicole through a chain of very lucky events. I met Mary Sue Seymour, the head agent and founder of the Seymour Agency, on an elevator while at the Romance Writers of America conference in NYC in 2011. When Mary Sue asked what genre I wrote and I told her paranormal, she gave me her card and told me to query Nicole. I sent Nicole a cold query and received a full request for my paranormal romance manuscript the very next day (now TWILIGHT HUNTER, the first novel in my Execution Underground series, releasing this September). It took me a little while to get the full manuscript to Nicole, as there were edits I wanted to do based on things I learned from the conference. But once I sent it to her, she emailed me the next day asking if I'd written the novel targeting Harlequin and asked if I could lengthen or shorten the word count accordingly if it were submitted to a category or single-title line. I replied, yes, that I would be willing to do that. My phone rang with an unknown number several minutes later. I don't pick up numbers I don't know, but then when my voicemail 'dinged' and I listened to it, it was Nicole calling to offer representation. I know now that she had laid in bed that morning and read the majority of my book on her cell phone! The thought of someone being that entranced over my work still amazes me. And Nic was right from the start, my manuscript ended up at Harlequin with their single-title HQN line!
Check back on Wednesday to read about the actual "call" part of mine and Nicole's conversation!

Fall in Love Blog Hop and GIVEAWAY
Happy (shortly belated) Halloween, everyone! Hope you had some great autumn festivities with more to come. A las personas que celebran el dia de los muertos, espero que disfrutan sus felicidades! En caso de mi espanol esta mal, perdonme por favor--no es mi lengua nativa y estoy aprendando lol.
First things first. As part of the Fall in Love hop theme hosted by the wonderful Reader's Confession, I want to gush about my two favorite debut authors this year: Kate SeRine and Cecy Robson. See their covers below! =D Aren't they pretty?
Both writing urban fantasy with a wonderful dash of romance, but casting their own unique spins on the genre, these ladies' novels rocked my socks off! Kate SeRine's gritty, badass heroine Tess "Red" Little knows how to hold her own in a world where fairytales run rampant. And Cecy Robson's kind-hearted, Weird Girl, Celia Wird, has a fierce inner tigress--literally!--and Celia's not afraid to sink her claws into anyone who threatens her family.
These debut authors have amazing voices. In all her stubbornness and intelligence, Tess kept me right by her side and rooting for her from the very first page, and Celia is a woman after my own heart--she balances the line between the girl everyone can relate to and a badass superwoman perfectly. ;-)
The writing is strong in both of these novels and any urban fantasy reader, and even those who normally enjoy solely paranormal romance, should give these fantastic debuts a try. I'm looking forward to the next installment of the Transplanted Tales and of the Weird Girls.
If you'd like to check out my full review of Kate SeRine's Red, please click the link: Review of Red. I also plan to host the wonderful Kate SeRine again in the coming months of 2013 with the release of the second novel in her Transplanted series, The Better to See You.
You'll have to wait patiently for my full reviews of Cecy Robson's Weird Girls. On November 27th I'll be posting a review of the Weird Girls Novella and on December 18th I'll be posting a review of the first full length novel in the series, Sealed with a Curse. I will clue you in--if you haven't caught my drift already--and say that I LOVED both Cecy Robson's books!
Now, onto the giveaway! U.S entrants only please!
Since my own publisher is Harlequin, I will be giving away four different Harlequin novels from various lines (three of which are signed): Killing Me Softly by Maggie Shayne (single-title romantic suspense), The Protector by Carla Capshaw (inspirational historical romance), His Bride for the Taking by Sandra Hyatt (contemporary romance, and The Longest Night by Cindy Dees (romantic suspense).
The giveaway starts today, November 1st 2012, and ends November 11th 2012 with the winner announced on the 12th.
So how about you? Who are your favorite debut authors of 2012? Please share in the comments! And don't forget to enter the giveaway! Extra entries for those who follow via FB or Twitter, or those who tweet about the contest. Cheers!

This week's question:
What's the biggest word you've seen used in a book lately - that made you stop and look it up? Might as well leave the definition and book too.
My Answer: Honestly, I can't think of the last time I had to stop and look up a word while reading lol. Not only am I a writer, but I have a B.A in English, am almost finished with my Masters in Writing, and actually am a paid English tutor for high school students, so I have a pretty expansive vocabulary.Check back on Monday for an awesome announcement! This week's question: What blogger inspires you? It could be any kind, it doesn't have to be a book blog.My Answer: Honestly, I don't have one individual blogger that inspires me. This week's question: Christmas in July! Someone gives you a giftcard for two books (whatever that costs). What two books will you buy?My Answer: I have so many books on my shelf lately that I haven't read that I can't imagine buying more at the current moment lol. But I would buy a copy of Laura Kaye's newest novel, Her Forbidden Hero, and I'd also pre-order a copy of Cecy Robson's debut urban fantasy novel, Sealed with a Curse.Second hop question: What's the ONE super-hyped book you'll NEVER read?My Answer: This is a hard question because I can't imagine saying I'd never read any piece of fiction. I know I'm not likely to read Fifty Shades of Gray, simply because I've read other novels with BDSM that (from what I hear) are way better written than 50 Shades. I'm also not likely to read J.K Rowling's debuting adult novel. I think reading something non-Harry Potter by her would just be strange and almost ruin my image of her as an author...I have no clue why, and I know it's kind of silly. I CAN say with absolute certainty though that for non-fiction I'd never read an autobiography or a biography about a conservative jackass, such as Rush Limbaugh, or some other douche. This week's question: If you could "unread" a book which would it be? Is it because you want to start over and experience it again for the first time? Or because it was THAT bad? My Answer: Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyer. WORST book I have EVER read, and such a huge disappointment since I enjoyed the other books in the series. Breaking Dawn kind of ruined the whole Twilight saga for me personally.Second hop question: Do you immediately write a review upon finishing a book or do you wait and write multiple reviews at once?My Answer: Neither. I usually only write one review at a time and it's usually a few days after I've read the book, not immediately. Also, there are a lot of books that I read that I don't review on this site, because they're not in my review genre.

This week's question: Summer Break is upon us! But I'm going to estimate on the low side and say three hundred (yes, that's a lower guess. It might be more lol).

Happy
Friday, everyone! I'm sure you're all glad it's the weekend! And the
weekend means, it's time for some blog hopping. So please hop on over to
Parajunkee's View or Alison Can Read,
and hop around to some new blogs. You can also participate in the
social media hop as well and our second blog hop at Crazy-for-Books! So have fun and check out my answer to the
weekly blog hop question below. Cheers!

This week's question: This Sunday in the U.S is Mother's Day. In celebration, what are some of your favorite books with strong mother/child relationships? My Answer: Honestly, the only book I can think of that has a prominent mother/child relationship is Harry Potter. I think the love from Harry's mother protecting him for all those years is a beautiful thing.Second hop question: Who is your favorite book character? I'll give you a maximum of two choices, but they have to be from different genres. My Answer: Well until recently, I would've said hands down that Eric Northman was my favorite fictional character. But I don't like what Charlainne Harris has been doing to him in the later Southern Vampire Novels, so I'm a little reluctant to say that still. My second favorite character from a different genre would have to be Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games. She's strong, kickass, and awesome. But of course, none of the above listed characters top my own characters for my favorites ;-)
On Monday we're going to have a review of Ally Condie's YA dystopian novel, Crossed, the second novel in the Matched Trilogy!

This week's question: What is one thing you wish you could tell your favorite author? My answer: I have lots of favorite authors, not one absolute favorite. So I will do a short address to the top three.Dear J.K Rowling:I bow to your extreme greatness. I am certain that you possess the Elixir of Writing, and maybe the Elixir of Life as well, but I'm more interested in the earlier one. If so, will you please share with the rest of us writer peons so we may, too, be as great? The world deserves yet another series as mind-bogglingly fantastic as Harry Potter.
Dear Charlainne Harris:
I've named my dog after one of your characters. For this reason, I believe you should tell me the secret to having such an amazing writing voice that readers will follow Sookie anywhere, even when the plot is sometimes lacking. Also, if you could stop trying to turn Eric into an ass and get back to the romance between him and Sookie, like in Dead to the World, we'd all really appreciate it.
Dear Suzanne Collins:
While Mockingjay was somewhat of a disappointment in the end, I still hold the belief that you write action scenes and tension better than any other author out there. I pray that someday my books will be as page-turning as yours. Also, thanks for making Katniss really badass to counteract the whole weakling Bella nonsense. Generations of women across the world all thank you for fixing the brains of our daughters, granddaughters, sisters, etc. Kickass girls too the end!
Yours truly,
A soon-to-be-published peon writer who strives toward your greatnessSecond hop question: Are you attending the Book Blogger Convention (aka Bea Bloggers) and/or Book Expo America in New York City in June? If not, will you participate in the online event called Armchair Bea?My Answer: I will not be attending the convention or the Expo, but I will be attending the online Armchair Bea event =)

This week's question: Have you ever had a character that disappointed you? One that you fell in love with and then "broke up" later on in either the series or the stand-alone book? Tell us about him or her. My answer: My first answer was going to be a near replica of Parajunkee's, because Anita Blake disappointed me too. But since Miss Parajunkee already chose Anita, I'll choose someone new.Dear Edward Cullen:We had a beautiful connection between us, but you threw it all away! I fell in love with you and your sexy romantic words, your conflicted bad boy ways. And I tried, Edward. I really tried to see past all your transgressions: I looked past the girly sparkling, and I even (with sadness) accepted your lack of fangs. Despite those flaws, I still thought of you as a romantic vampire. But your true character showed as time progressed. You became overly possessive, controlling, and at times, near abusive. But even in the face of those misunderstanding, I still I forgave you. But Edward, as hard as I have tried, I cannot forgive you for ripping open a woman's uterus with your teeth. You crossed the line between sexy vampire and supernatural creeper in one swift chomp. Though my heart still aches, I wish you well and will always miss what we had in the beginning. It is a shame we cannot go back.Yours never again,Team Jacob Fan
