For today's post, I have some much needed market news. Here's what's going on in the publishing industry recently.
Earlier this month, the publishing industry experienced the unfortunate lost of Walter Zacharias. Zacharias, a romance publisher who founded Kensington Publishing and contributed widely to the romance genre, passed away in his home in Manhattan earlier this month. He died at age 87. The industry has also lost several literary agents this month. According to data on querytracker, agents Katelynn Lacopo, Dena Fischer, and Jason Pinter are no longer working as agents. It seems like literary agents are dropping like flies lately. Let's hope this trend doesn't continue--it's not good for their clients who are left orphaned, or the many writers out there searching for a home for their book.
In other news, with the closing of Borders and the rise of ebooks, publishers are now turning to different methods to sell their paperback books. In the final bit of news I have, Avon is launching a new ebook line and as a result, changing their submission policies. Avon is set to launch their new ebook line, Avon Impulse, this coming summer. The imprint will be dedicated to digital titles and will publish exclusively romance. However, Avon Impulse is currently accepting both agented and unagented submissions in all categories of romance in novel and novella length fiction. Avon Impulse will not pay advances, but will pay 25% royalties on all ebooks and after 10,000 ebook copies sold will increase royalties to 50%. All material submitted for consideration for Avon Impulse will simultaneously be considered for Avon's regular paperback imprints, and all ebook titles will also be available in print-on-demand.
