Market for News for the Week

Happy Monday, everyone! Hope you all had a great weekend! Today we have some market news for the week, so let's jump right into it.

As Amazon gears up to launch their publishing imprint by launching their fall titles, booksellers are trying to decide whether to stock the books of the company they consider to be their biggest competitor. The answer seems to be 50/50 with many booksellers saying they will definitely stock the books, others saying no they won't. But the majority have responded with yes, they will stock certain books under certain conditions. Barnes and Noble fell into that later group saying they will stock Amazon titles, but only if they have the rights to all channels of those titles. That means B&N will stock Amazon titles as long as they also have the rights to sell digital versions of those titles. A Seattle based law firm has filed a class-action suit against Apple and five of the major six publishers including: Hachette, Penguin, Simon & Schuster, HarperCollins, and MacMillan. The suit accuses publishers of trying to fix e-book prices and attempting to force Amazon into higher ebook rates. The New York Times reports that BookStats, a comprehensive survey conducted by two trade groups, revealed a hint of revival in publishing, despite the doomsday-ist who seem to plague the industry. The Association of American Publishers and the Book Industry Study Group collaborated on this effort and as I writer, I'll agree that things look promising when you look at these statistics. Avon Books has teamed up with the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance to urge women to K.I.S.S (Know the Important Signs and Symptoms). The groups are trying to raise awareness in the same ways many breast cancer foundations have managed to raise awareness to women's health. Avon Books donated an initial $25,000 dollars to the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance to support the cause.
